Bertelsmann to buy Napster for a song. Napster CEO Konrad Hilbers and Shawn Fanning, the service's creator, will remain with the company after resigning earlier in the week. Napster's going price: $8 million. [CNET News.com] Wonder why they bought it? Brand, I guess.

MS Office gets a wake-up call. Many users didn't take Sun seriously when it released StarOffice. But with version 6.0, one thing is clear: Microsoft Office finally has a viable competitor. I tried to check out ZOË yesterday -- mostly I couldn't get it to work.   I configured an IMAP server and nothing happened -- not even a complaint.   However, I looked at the parts of the software I could look at without mail.  Looks like they have some pretty big plans -- currently supports HTTP and SMTP, looks like they plan to support inbound IMAP and HTTPS and a couple other things.   It uses Lucene and some code for the Google API.   Looks like it is built on some app server code from webobjects.com and uses a lot of XML (and HTML and WML) parsing code from Apache
