How embarassing - this is probably my first posting to Usenet ever, captured for posterity by Google.   Why couldn't I have been talking about something more profound or interesting?    Guess it goes to show you -- you'll never know how you'll be remembered.  I guess the upside is that I can date my Internet use back to 1990.

[The Motley Fool] IBM's Accounting Tricks. Will IBM's accounting shenanigans hurt it? Instead of counting the sale of a company as other income, they treated at a decrease in operating costs. They claim they've done it this way for 10 years.

[Scripting News] At the same time, we're back on track with Google on the XML stuff. Should be pretty interesting. Can't say more at this time. [The New York Times: Opinion] Office of Strategic Mendacity. People at the Defense Department and elsewhere are cringing at the news that the Pentagon's shadowy new Office of Strategic Influence is plotting to plant deliberately false stories in the foreign press, with both feral and friendly nations.  This is one of those things governments ought not be allowed to do - governments are best for their own people when they are completely transparent.

[via Tomalak's Realm] "The almost universal response from potential partners was: 'We don't understand the business model; we don't know how we or Microsoft will make money on the plan; and we don't necessarily trust Microsoft to be the single repository or host for this model." Ouch.
